Designer Unleashes Art With Heart
Designer Bryan Boyd, 25, said he's always had an entrepreneur's spirit.
His new clothing company, Urban Humanity, was born out of his past work in the nonprofit and business sector. Boyd served as Communications Coordinator for Basic Rights Oregon from 2006 to 2007 and now works for Rain Agency, an advertising firm in Northwest Portland. He started his first design business at the age of 19.
"This was always something that was in the back of my mind. I wanted to create clothes that not only I would wear, but that the community would love to wear", said Boyd. "When you put them on, you look in the mirror and say, 'I look damn good.' "
Boyd and his business partner, Brandon Berg, want their clothing to represent the Pacific Northwest, from the images on the items to the humanity of their business practices. Boyd says many of their products are green using organic materials and printing with water-based inks that have a low impact on the environment, their packaging is also both recycled and recyclable.
"Here in Portland, we have an urban center that seems so complex, but at its heart, you have this amazing humanity," said Boyd, explaining the company's name and guiding principle.
He said as the business grows, he intends to donate a percentage of profits to area environmental, social justice and other nonprofit organizations.
"It's about crating a company that shares my personal values and the values I believe are shared by my community," said Boyd.
